Bolted Connections of Glass Structures by means of Two Holes In-line

Vencl, Eliášová, Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic

This paper deals with bolted connections of glass structures. Glass is frequently bolted to steel structures. Contrary to common materials (steel, aluminium), which can reach plasticity, glass bahaves elastically until it breaks by a brittle fracture. This is the reason why connections should by designed with great care. The main question for bolted connection is to determine the state of stress and the level, to which the forces of individual bolts act together. In this case, we used the photoelastic method. The research is based on experimental investigation of bolt joints (one or two bolts in a row) loaded by shear force and numerical studie. For description of the force distribution around the bolts photoelastic analysis and strain gauges were used.
