China float glass sector energy efficiency survey

Xinchun (Steven) Wang, Institute of Technical Information for Building Materials Industry of China

China flat glass output is 17.5 mt in 2005, accounting for 40% of the world total. 86% of the output was produced by 142 float glass lines. China is producing 38% of global float glass. More than 7 million tons of SCE is consumed per year. In March 2006 a primary survey on China float glass sector energy efficiency was taken by the Institute of Technical Information for Building Materials Industry of China(ITIBMIC). 5 companies were surveyed, 3 of which are among top 1000 energy users in China. Furnace energy efficiency data of 28 float glass lines were collected and analysed. It is showed that the average specific energy consumption for China float glass is 7800 kJ/kg glass melt, which is 20% higher than the world average, 32% poorer than the world advanced. The best in the world consumes 53% lower fuel than China average.

In March 2006, the researchers of the Institute of Technical Information for Building Materials Industry of China (ITIBMIC) conducted a preliminary survey on the energy efficiency in Chinese float glass industry, sponsored by the subprogramme ‘Analysis and Comparison of Benchmark for Energy Efficiency in Industry’ of the administrative office of EU-China Energy and Environment Programme(EEP).
