Lead- and Cadmium-free Colours for a New Generation of Architectural Glass

Axel Giesecke

Since many decades glass enamels based on
lead and cadmium containing frits and stains have
been widely used for the decoration of glass. It is
well known, that heavy-metal containing glass
colours may cause problems during processing and
disposal. Due to the environment policy in many
countries to ban lead and cadmium Cerdec has
developed a completely new generation of frits and
pigments.
Testing of the new Cerdec Colour range 140
shows that all properties such as chemical
resistance, weathering durability and mechanical
strength are completely equivalent to the standard
heavy-metal containing products.
Furthermore, the use of lead-free enamel
technology provides opportunities to create new
colour shades and designs as such as intense
metallic effects on glasses.
