Problem of splitting of glass in two layers during horizontal tempering operation

The author discusses the step by step analysis of a unique problem faced by some of the processors in India during horizontal tempering of thick clear glass in their furnace. Breakage of glass during tempering results in stoppage of furnace for a longer period. Due to this, it becomes impossible to keep the commitments to the customers apart from having more production costs. This problem was taken up as a deep analysis project under TQM implementation and a number of glass specialists got involved in this. After getting a breakthrough idea , experimentations were performed to validate the idea and latter standardized .
