Fused silica rollers in glass environment

Gilbert Rancoule, Nathalie Niveau, Dwayne Bucko, Ren Bartoe, Vesuvius R&D

The modification of glass strength and durability through controlled reaction of the glass in SO2 environment is well-established procedure for glassmaking companies. The development of SO2 injection in the furnace is creating singular working conditions that influence the rolls operation and requires understanding of the chemical reactions. Nominal service conditions and roll maintenance should be observed for the best operating practices.Sodium sulfate is a key element of the reaction between the glass chemistry and the atmosphere typically encountered.
