New developments in glazing for a better use of solar energy in buildings

Many landmark buildings incorporate technically challenging façades or feature elements like stairs and bridges that are constructed of structural glass elements. Whether they are predominately structural glass, or combined with architecturally expressed cable and/or steel elements, the fact remains that many of these building components would not have been possible without the collaboration of designers and manufacturers working together to solve a complex problem. The main focus of this paper is to generate interest in developing this relationship further and perhaps establishing a forum or mechanism that may advance the use of this unique building material so that designs that were thought to be impossible or too costly can become a reality in the very near future.
