Transparency versus Security

Bernhard Weller & Thorsten Weimar, Technische Universität Dresden, Institute of Building Construction,Germany

Laminated glass panes with polycarbonate sheets as interlayer material are usually referred to as glass-polycarbonate sandwiches. These elements are typically used as security glazing in architecture. The design of the sandwiches depends considerably on the necessary classification of resistance against attack. Suitable cross sections of glass-polycarbonate sandwiches are developed, which serve for typical architectural applications and can be classified according to the requested level of resistance against attack. The main focus of the research is on the structural performance and the post-breakage behaviour of the sandwich elements. The result obtained may promote the practical implementation of glasspolycarbonate sandwich elements in contemporary architecture.
