The science of design: Helping architects & designers expand their environment-friendly design options on flat glass

Gerhard Tünker, Holger Geisler & Hildegard Paulus, Ferro GmbH & Phil Maitland, Ferro Corporation

This paper will cover some innovative decoration solutions for flat glass with the emphasis on architectural glass. Architects have traditionally been asked to work with colored coatings and designs viewed through the glass which can limit the design options available. Significant improvements and new approaches to glass science have resulted in the development of more durable glasses, which in turn have opened up the possibility to coat and print architectural glass on surface one. The result: a much broader range of design effects and textures ranging from matt and semi-matt to wood-effect, stone-effect and metal-effect... The paper will also cover screen-printable mirror-effect reflective coatings, as potential alternative to PVD coatings and other novel materials.
