A Manufacturing Process of Tempered and Heat Strengthened Glass without Spontaneous Breakage

Masashi Kikuta and Chihiro Sakai

Heat Soak Test (HST) has been progressed and applied for tempered glass to avoid spontaneous breakage causing by NiS phase transformation. However, a suffi ciently low breakage risk was remained in two cases even though adapted HST has been applied. One case is that NiS inclusion is located near the compressive residual stress inside the tempered glass, and the other is that its diameter is considerably small. Critical diameters of NiS to cause spontaneous breakage were calculated with respect to a mount of compressive stress value by using fracture mechanics. Applied HST performance was summarized in this paper.
