Elisabeth Flygt and Stellan Persson, Glafo, the Swedish Glass Research Institute
In 2004 a working team was formed with a focus on research, education and information. It is a network between flat glass organisations (Glasbranschföreningen - GBF, Svensk
Planglasförening - SPF, Monteringstekniska kommittén - MTK, Glafo - the Swedish Glass Research Institute, Växjö University, Lund University) and glass manufacturers (Pilkington and Emmaboda Glas) in Sweden. During spring 2005 persons responsible for university programmes in engineering and architecture in Sweden were interviewed. We wanted to know how much glass education there was in the different programmes.
We found out that 50 % of the programmes had only one to five lessons during 3-5 years. In some programmes there was no glass education at all. Only one programme had a threeweek glass course. However, glass was mentioned when the different universities taught about windows and sometimes it could be the subject of project works.
The result was alarming and the group decided to take a first step to raise the glass awareness of the teachers and students by making a one week inspirational glass university course. This course will be ready to be taught for the first time in 2007 and will have a main
focus on flat glass possibilities and its applications.
