Latest state-of-the-art laser cutting development

This article discusses the latest developments and possibilities of industrial processing brittle materials (e.g. glass) with a laser beam.

New applications in the field of glass processing with laser require new ideas. In the last 2 years more and more further developments with laser cutting have been made involving the processing of glass on different applications.

The cutting of glass directly on the float line has been improved. Different mechanical standards have been established and it could be proven that the laser cutting is able of processing glass from 0.7 to 19 mm direct on the float line. The first sales could be made and further companies are looking into the laser cutting to improve their process.

In the field of FPD – Display cutting with laser a new technology has been established that is fully separating the display glass in one process step while offering high processing speeds and the elimination of the breaking or reversing process.

JENOPTIK has also further developed the cutting of thicker glasses using a laser technology with a solid state laser which offers a clean cut without the need of breaking. A new application system gives customers the chance to process their samples in a big scale format and personally see the difference on their samples.

These technologies in the different applications were developed to a industry proven stage and are able to be implemented into existing production processes with all the advantages a laser cut glass has (micro crack free, no glass dust, no splinters, clean-room applicable, non-tactile process).

Using the same technology it is possible to process glass in all the different discussed applications and also separate very thin glass and brittle materials as ceramic and semiconductors.
