A New Model for the Design of Window Glass Plates Using Fracture Mechanics Concepts

Dr. Leon Jacob

A fracture mechanics technique is used to
quantify the permissible fracture stress in glass
after applying a suitable factor of safety. This is
dependent on the depth of the surface scratch
rather than the failure prediction model employing
the Weibull distribution. This model takes into
account a limiting deflection criteria and evaluates
a plate thickness for a given panel size.
